Preparation

In order to be successful it is important to be well prepared. Please study the course material carefully, read up on analysis of text, improve your vocabulary and revise oral and written communication at an advanced level.

The parts of the examination

The examination is divided into two parts: one written part and one oral part spread out during a test period of several days. Information about times and places will be given in due time. The testing consists of written tests, oral tests and presentations and listening tests. It is of utmost importance to be well prepared and to attend on the set dates.

The written part

The written tests consist of 3 tests:

  • Writing test – composition (250 – 600 words) (80 minutes)
  • Reading test (90 minutes)
  • Listening test (about 50 minutes)

The oral part

The oral tests take place one week after the written parts. The oral tests take about 1 hour. The following mandatory tasks are included:

1. Presentation of a novel.

Please choose one of the two novels below. You need to bring the book along to the oral test, when you will deal with the content and discuss the topics and themes in this novel. Do also consider the structure of the novel, the role of the narrator and the language.

Choose one of the following novels:

  • Title: The Notebook
    Writer: Sparks, Nicholas
  • Title: Of Mice and Men
    Writer: Steinbeck, John

2. Presentation of two newspaper articles containing aspects of interest in a discussion.

You can find articles in one or more of the following English-speaking newspapers or magazines for example:

  • National Geographic
  • The Guardian
  • Daily Telegraph
  • The New York Times
  • The Washington Post

It is mandatory to bring the articles along to the oral test.

Please remember:

  • Choose articles, not just notices (like half a page in Dagens Nyheter).
  • Read the articles and make sure to be able to present a summary of the main content.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about words and phrases from the articles.
  • Be prepared to talk about the content.

3. An oral presentation of a chosen topic (about 4 minutes).

Please choose one topic to present from any of the following aspects of the world of English:

  • Traditions
  • Social issues and/or politics
  • The role of English in the English-speaking world

Your chosen topic must be related to a part of the world where English is the first official language. The task should include a presentation of the topic with facts, but also some kind of comments by you, for example values, your opinions and/or experience. You can use notes, but reading from a manuscript is not acceptable.

Grades - Criteria

The grade will be based on the outcome of all parts of the testing. An overall assessment of the level (grade) will be made after the test period, according to criteria from Skolverket.
